Who needs a visual metronome

  • Drummers behind a shield or in a loud room, where a click through wedges is hopeless and in-ears are not always an option: a flashing light metronome on the music stand is the fix.
  • Bands on stage: one phone or tablet at the front of the riser gives every player the same downbeat without a click in anyone's ears.
  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing musicians, for whom a light or a vibration is the metronome.
  • Silent practice late at night, in a shared flat, in a library or a classroom, where a silent metronome that only flashes keeps the peace.
  • Teachers and conductors who want a class or an ensemble to watch the pulse rather than listen for it.
  • Dancers, who count with their eyes as much as their ears, and video and film crews who need a visual click track on set.

Flash, pendulum or counter: which display to use

Flash is the choice for distance. The whole panel lights on every beat (amber for the downbeat, white for the others in the Stage palette) and a bright field is readable in peripheral vision from across a room, so you never have to look straight at the screen. Subdivisions can flash too, dimmer and shorter, and a row of dots shows where you are in the bar.

Pendulum is the choice for feel. A blink tells you the beat has happened; a swing tells you when it will happen, because you watch the bob slow down at the top of its arc. That is why mechanical metronomes are easier to play with than blinking LEDs, and this pendulum keeps the property: it reaches each side exactly on the click and is driven by the audio clock, not by an animation loop that drifts.

Counter is the choice for structure. The beat number fills the screen, 1 in the accent color, so a conductor, a teacher or a nervous soloist always knows where they are in the bar. In Flash mode you can also overlay the number. Set the counter to a 7/8 or 5/4 time signature and it counts the grouping, not just the beats.

Setting it up on a stage or a music stand

  1. Set the tempo and time signature, choose the Stage palette, and press play.
  2. Tap the fullscreen icon (or press F). The controls hide after a few seconds; tap the screen to bring them back.
  3. Turn the device landscape, brightness to maximum, and place it at eye level. The screen stays awake while the metronome runs.
  4. Mute the click (M) if the room must be quiet, or leave it on and route it to in-ears; the flash follows whatever you hear, Bluetooth delay included. For a rehearsal with real drum sounds instead of a click, the drum metronome runs on the same clock.
  5. Plug the device in for a long set. On an OLED screen the black background barely uses power; the flashes are brief.

How to read a flashing light metronome without staring at it

Do not look at the light; look through it. Put the screen in the edge of your field of view, above your music or beside the drummer, and let the flash arrive as a pulse rather than an image you have to decode. Use the downbeat color as an anchor once per bar and the dots for the count in between. If you find yourself reacting late, switch to the pendulum for a while: following the swing teaches your body to anticipate, and the anticipation carries back to the flash.

Vibration, haptics and camera flash

On Android, Chrome lets the page pulse the phone's vibration motor, so with the phone in a pocket or on a stool you feel the beat, a short buzz for the beat, a longer one for the downbeat. iPhones do not expose vibration to web pages. How exact can a light be?

The click itself is placed at an exact sample on the audio thread; that part is as precise as any metronome can be. The light is limited by the display: a 60 Hz screen redraws every 16.7 ms, so a flash can land up to about 8 ms early or late relative to the sound; 90 and 120 Hz screens halve that. Each flash is scheduled to the moment the click leaves the speaker, using the browser's report of output latency, so sound and light agree even when Bluetooth pushes the sound a quarter of a second later. In silent mode there is nothing to agree with, and the flashes are simply as regular as the engine: no drift, ever.

For deaf and hard-of-hearing musicians

Choose High contrast if colors are hard to tell apart (the downbeat is marked by brightness alone) and turn on the beat number so the position in the bar never depends on counting flashes. On Android, add vibration. For rehearsal rooms, a tablet in fullscreen Counter mode placed centrally works as a shared conductor. To train the internal clock without any cue, thegap trainer drops the beat for whole bars, and its silence is as visible as it is audible. If you rely on the light for performance, the app's haptic and camera-flash beats are the dependable option, because they do not need the screen on.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be completely silent?

Yes. Tap the speaker icon (or press M) and the click is muted while the light keeps time. The engine still runs, so the flash is exactly as regular as the sound would be. Share links can carry the silent setting.

Does the screen stay on?

While it is playing the page holds a screen wake lock where the browser supports it (Chrome, Edge, Safari 16.4 and later), so the display will not dim or lock mid-song. Keep the device plugged in for a long set.

Does it work with the screen off or in the background?

No. A web page cannot show light or vibrate when the screen is off, and mobile browsers pause audio in the background. The Beatmate Android app has a camera-flash beat and a haptic pulse that work with the phone in your pocket.

Why does the flash seem late with Bluetooth headphones?

It is aligned to the sound you hear, and Bluetooth delays that sound by 100-250 ms. If you are using the light without the click, mute the sound and the delay disappears; if you use both, they agree with each other, which is what matters.

Is there a bouncing-ball or swinging metronome?

Yes, the Pendulum display. It swings continuously, reaching each side exactly on the beat, so you can anticipate the click the way you would with a mechanical metronome instead of reacting to a blink.

Can I see subdivisions as well as beats?

Turn on Flash subdivisions: eighths, triplets or sixteenths flash dimmer and shorter than the beat, so the pulse stays obvious while the grid is visible.

Which colors are best for a stage?

The Stage palette: black background, white beat, amber downbeat. It is readable from across a room, easy on the eyes in a dark venue, and on an OLED screen the black background saves battery. High contrast uses brightness alone to mark the downbeat, for anyone who finds color hard to distinguish.

Can I use it as a visual click track for video or film?

Yes. Set the tempo, go full screen on a monitor in the performer's eyeline, mute the click if the room needs to be quiet, and the flash gives every take the same tempo. The beat counter display also helps a conductor or director call bars.
