How to find the BPM of a song by tapping

  1. Find the pulse, not the melody. Nod along first. The beat you would count out loud, the one your foot lands on, is the one to tap.
  2. Tap the pad on every beat (or press Space). Two taps give a first reading; the number settles as you continue.
  3. Tap through a whole phrase, eight or sixteen beats. Switch to Whole take for the most precise average; the ± figure tells you how sure the reading is.
  4. Check half and double time. If the number looks off for the style, the ½ and ×2 chips show the alternatives.
  5. Test it. Test click plays a metronome at the tapped tempo; if it runs away from the song, tap again.
  6. Use it. Open in metronome carries the tempo into the full metronome with subdivisions, time signatures and accents.

Missed a beat? Keep going. A gap that is almost exactly two beats long is read as two beats with a missing tap, not as the tempo suddenly halving. A pause longer than two seconds starts a fresh take, and finished takes are kept below the pad so you can compare the verse with the chorus.

How accurate is a tap BPM counter?

Accuracy comes from the number of beats you cover, not from tapping harder. A single interval carries all of your reaction-time jitter, typically 10-30 ms, which at 120 BPM is a 2-7 BPM error. Averaging over sixteen beats divides that error by sixteen: the same jitter becomes a fraction of a BPM. That is why the Whole take mode exists, and why DJs tap for a full sixteen-bar phrase before trusting the number. The Last 8 taps mode trades some precision for responsiveness: use it when the tempo genuinely moves, such as in live or classical recordings. Either way, a tap tempo finder is only as good as its averaging, which is why this one shows you the spread instead of a single confident number.

The readout measures the moment your finger touches the pad (the pointerdown event), not the release, and timestamps it with a sub-millisecond clock. Touch screens add a few milliseconds of their own latency, but it is constant, so it cancels out of the intervals.

Half time or double time: typical tempos by style

Every groove can be counted at two or three levels, and tap tempo will faithfully report whichever one you tap. When the number looks wrong for the style, it is usually the level, not the taps. These ranges are conventions, not rules; plenty of tracks sit outside them.

Test the tempo, then check your own timing

Numbers are only half the job. Press Test click and the page plays a metronome at the tapped tempo, using the same sample-accurate engine as the online metronome. Let it run against the song: if the click stays on the beat for a full minute, the number is right; if it drifts ahead or behind, the difference tells you which way to correct.

While the click is running, your taps stop retuning it and are graded instead: each tap shows how many milliseconds early or late it landed, with a running average and spread. Twenty milliseconds of spread is tight; consistently early or late by a fixed amount is a feel, not an error; many drummers sit deliberately behind the beat. Beat length, delay times and LFO rates from BPM

The table under the tap pad converts the current tempo into note lengths. The maths is simple (one beat lasts 60,000 ÷ BPM milliseconds, an eighth note half of that, a dotted eighth three quarters, an eighth-note triplet a third) but having it live saves a calculator in the studio. Typical uses:

  • Rhythmic delay: set the delay time to the dotted eighth (the classic 3/16 echo) or the quarter note.
  • Reverb pre-delay: a sixteenth or thirty-second keeps the reverb tucked behind the beat.
  • LFO / tremolo rate: the Hz column is cycles per second; set a filter LFO to the quarter-note Hz for one sweep per beat.
  • Compressor release: a release near a sixteenth or eighth note lets the compressor breathe with the groove.

Tap tempo in your DAW

Most DAWs can tap a tempo too, if you know where to look: Ableton Live has a Tap button beside the tempo in the control bar; Logic Pro offers a Tap Tempo key command; Pro Tools tapes the tempo when you switch the Conductor off and tap T with the tempo field selected; Cubase includes one in its Beat Calculator. Frequently asked questions

How many taps do I need for an accurate BPM?

Two taps give a first number; eight give a usable one; sixteen or more, in Whole take mode, pin most songs to within a fraction of a BPM. The ± figure under the tempo is the statistical uncertainty of your taps; keep tapping until it is smaller than the precision you need.

Why does the BPM keep changing while I tap?

Human taps are never perfectly even, so every new tap nudges the average. In Last 8 taps mode the reading follows you closely and settles once your tapping does; in Whole take mode each tap has less influence and the number converges. If the song itself speeds up or slows down (live recordings often do), the rolling window is the honest reading.

Is the tempo 70 or 140? How do I know if I am tapping half time?

Both are “correct”: they describe the same music at different levels of the pulse. Convention is what decides: dubstep and trap are usually written around 140 with a half-time feel, reggae around 70-90 on the one-drop, drum & bass at 170-180. Tap the level you would count out loud, then check the ½ and ×2 chips against the typical ranges below.

Can this detect the BPM of a song automatically from audio?

Not on this page. It measures your taps, which is more reliable than automatic detection for anything with a loose or rubato feel, and works with music playing anywhere in the room. Tap for a full phrase, then use Test click to confirm the number against the track.

What is the test click for?

It plays a metronome click at the tapped tempo so you can hear whether your number matches the song. While it runs, your taps are graded against it in milliseconds, early or late, which turns the page into a quick timing check.

How do I use the beat length table?
